Lost in life and beset by a recent passing, Armin has nowhere to go and just as much to show for himself. Fate (or something like it) intervenes when Armin awakes one morning and discovers that seemingly all of humanity has disappeared, leaving him to his limited devices and opening the door for self-discovery — but the gift of maximum freedom bears complications. The first new film from Berlin School veteran Ulrich Köhler (Sleeping Sickness) in seven years, In My Room is a profound meditation on family, identity, and the nature of independence.

A lean, evocative allegory... a sly and restrained revision of a well-trod genre.

Daniel Kasman, MUBI Notebook

Strange, funny, sneakily poignant... A disquieting, wonderfully imagined survivalist drama.

Guy Lodge, Variety

Remarkable and bracing... In My Room displays the most basic truth: humanity without freedom for all is no longer humanity.

Michael Sicinski, Cinema Scope

A film of meticulous details and sly, subtle ironies... Köhler takes a disarmingly realistic and restrained approach to a fantastical premise: the eternally popular fantasy of the last man on earth.

Dennis Lim, Film Comment

Horrifying, hilarious and deeply humane. The sight of Armin on horseback, a massive rifle strapped to his back, ranks amongst the most inspired images to come out of German cinema in recent memory.

Giovanni Marchini Camia, Sight & Sound
